The State Education Department (SED) has pushed back the deadline for school districts to adopt a new teacher evaluation system. While this is the right step for our schools, we should never have gotten to this point. SED’s action illustrates the ongoing confusion within our education system.
The rollout of Common Core has been a disaster for New York schools. As a result, the policies and programs connected to the tests – like teacher evaluations – are compromised because of the flawed foundational element.
Assembly Republicans debated the Governor’s misguided and heavy-handed teacher evaluation reforms for six hours, before overwhelmingly voting “No” on the proposal. In contrast, when Assembly Democrats were given the chance to step up for students and schools, they stepped away.
